#TearDownWalls

In Colombia, there has been a disturbing surge in assassinations of community activists since the Peace Accords were signed in 2016. There has also been an inspiring national and international response, with mass protests breaking out around the globe. #Vencerlavida, reads the hashtag: May Life Win.

In the U.S., the youth violence in our city streets has now been joined by an increase in school shootings across our suburbs. Again, the response inspires: students walk out around the country in support of tighter gun laws, urban and suburban alike. #Enough, reads the hashtag.

Meanwhile, my local Cosecha chapter in Boston organizes its own campaign to abolish ICE, and I march with them, demanding Northeastern University stop financial and logistical support for the young agency that is tearing families apart. #WeWillNotBeComplicit, reads the hashtag.

#TearDownWalls is an installation that celebrates all of the ways that we struggle, and all of the places where we struggle, to defend human rights for all. It celebrates how our movements have learned to cross borders, and the new collective strength this gives us.
